Attaching a drive to a router via USB is not a good idea, even if a router supports it. USB generates an interrupt for every 16 bytes of data. This causes your router to be constantly handling interrupts transferring data to and from the drive.

My problem lies in that i’m storing all my media on a usb3 external hard drive connected to my netgear R6300 wireless router. Streaming has been no problem however i was disappointed to realize my laptop has to ON in order to connect to my media which is stored on my network. I often watch my movies either
